Page 17On January 1, 2012, the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act will become efficient. The Act requires every large retailer and producer doing business in California to publicly disclose whether or not it has taken specified actions to get rid of slavery and human trafficking from its product provide chain. The Act does not require an organization to make any effort to get rid of slavery or human trafficking, however only to reveal the extent, if any, to which it has taken the actions listed within the Act. The influence of the Act in the end will depend upon the extent to which shoppers, buyers and activists use the required disclosure to strain corporations to observe and eliminate abuses in their supply chains.
